NSW: NSW refuses to adopt tail-docking ban

SYDNEY, April 11 AAP - The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) condemned todaythe refusal by the New South Wales and the Northern Territory agriculture ministers toratify a national ban on the docking of dog tails.

The refusals were registered at a meeting of state and territory agriculture ministersin Brisbane yesterday.

Dr Jo Toia, the national AVA president, singled out NSW and the territory for criticismover their demands for more time to consider the issue.

"There is no valid reason for an extension of time with such a groundswell of supportin favour of a national ban and given that the majority of states and territories havecommitted at this meeting," Dr Toia said.

"The case has been made for a long time ... that it is cruel and the animals suffer.

We are amazed that ministers continue to procrastinate when the case is so clear."

Tail docking is a largely cosmetic procedure performed on pups with either scissorsor by binding the tail with tight rubber bands.
