The city school board Wednesday adopted a $9.6 million budget, expected to increase the tax rate by 16 percent, weeks ahead of the June 30 deadline.
A brief discussion of the budget was marked by uncharacteristic disagreement among board members, several of whom said they were frustrated with the process.
Board member Frank Bisnett said the most troubling aspect of the budget was the size of an increase negotiated in a contract signed four years ago.
The increase in teachers' salaries totals $360,460 or 35 percent of a $1.02 million increase in spending over the 1989-90 budget.
