Hall, John

Hall, John (1575–1635) Entered Queens’ College, Cambridge, 1589; BA, 1593; MA, 1597; studied medicine in France; settled in Stratford-upon-Avon about 1600. He married Shakespeare's elder daughter, Susanna, on 5 June 1607. Their daughter, Elizabeth, was baptized on 21 February 1608.

He was a distinguished physician, and had to pay £10 on refusing a knighthood from Charles I in 1626. One of his medical diaries, written in Latin, was translated and printed in 1657 as Select Observations on English Bodies. He was a devout Christian, with Puritan sympathies, presented Holy Trinity Church with a carved pulpit, and was a churchwarden.

The Halls are said to have lived in Hall's Croft; they certainly lived in New Place after Shakespeare's death. John is buried in the chancel of Holy Trinity Church, and his gravestone is now close to that of his father-in-law.
